Leader in quantum innovation remembered

Monday, June 23, 2025

Dr. Raymond Laflamme, a visionary in quantum information science and founding director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), passed away on June 19 after a long illness. His leadership helped position Canada as a global force in quantum research and shaped the future of quantum innovation at the University of Waterloo.

Laflamme’s vision for IQC laid the groundwork for deep collaboration across campus, including a long-standing partnership with Waterloo Engineering. Today, six engineering faculty members are part of the IQC research community, contributing to joint discoveries, industry-focused ventures and more than $13 million in shared research funding.

The partnership has also opened new pathways for students. Waterloo Engineering has worked closely with IQC on both graduate and undergraduate learning, including a collaborative MASc in Quantum Information in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Since 2021, dozens of undergraduate students have taken part in co-op and research placements at the institute, gaining hands-on experience in a rapidly evolving field.

The Faculty of Engineering extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Laflamme’s family, friends and colleagues.
