New graduate found time for a lot more than studying

From experience holding elected student office to volunteer roles in the community, Mariko Shimoda leaves with a lot more than an undergraduate degree as she officially graduates from Waterloo Engineering this week.

The mechanical engineering student found time during her academic career to rack up an impressive list of extracurricular accomplishments and land a full-time job at her last co-op employer.

“At Waterloo, it’s easy to think we’re all students going to school, but at the end of the day we’re part of the larger community,” Shimoda says. “And I think if you can give back, it’s great because you become more connected to the people living in the city.”
