Ralph Haas's pioneering work created better road systems

Ralph Haas, professor emeritus and a former chair of civil and environmental engineering, died last week at the age of 87.

His ground-breaking concepts and technologies resulted in better-performing road networks and recognition as 'the father of pavement asset management' throughout the engineering world. 

Among the dozens of academic and professional honours he received, Haas was a member of the Order of Canada, the Royal Society of Canada, the Engineering Institute of Canada, a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals.

Born in Alberta, Haas held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Alberta and a PhD from the University of Waterloo. [full story]
