Two research projects led by professors at Waterloo Engineering were approved for almost $475,000 in federal funding this week under a program designed to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on roadways.
Projects led by Dr. Krzysztof Czarnecki and Dr. Bruce Hellinga are among 35 initiatives across the country to receive a total of $14.6 million through the Enhanced Road Safety Transfer Payment Program of Transport Canada.
Czarnecki, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, is the principal investigator of a project called Enhancing Driving Automation Safety in Canada: A Traffic Data-Driven Approach for Advanced Driver Assistance System and Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Test Scenarios. It was awarded $238,577.
Hellinga, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, leads a project called Improving Road Safety in Canadian Municipalities. It was approved for $235,577.
Areas of focus for road safety projects announced nation-wide include driver assistance systems, alcohol and drug-impaired driving, distracted driving, winter road conditions, speeding, and young drivers and vulnerable road users.
