Two students have been recognized nationally for their leadership, service and character as recipients of one of Canada’s most prestigious undergraduate awards.
First-year students Edna Nortey and Aishwarya Tandon were named 2025 Loran Scholars, an honour granted annually to just 36 individuals from thousands of applicants across the country. The award is valued at more than $100,000 over four years.
Nortey, studying architectural engineering, co-leads the newcomer working group within the Toronto Youth Cabinet, representing more than 625,000 young people. She has researched the experiences of Black students in STEM, co-founded her school’s Black Student Alliance and was valedictorian at her school.
Tandon, beginning systems design engineering, co-founded an international non-profit advocating for youth mental health. She has also published educational booklets for children in hospitals, co-directed her school’s global activism council and volunteered with Saint John’s Ambulance.
