A former student at Waterloo Engineering is now getting traction in Silicon Valley as the founder and chief executive officer of a technology startup that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to do home appraisals via a mobile app.

Humza Ahmed was studying mechanical engineering when he was bitten by the business bug and inspired by the entrepreneurship ecosystem at Waterloo to put a new twist on an occupation with deep roots in his family.

His software company, San Francisco-based Automax.ai, has since raised more than $5 million in backing as it seeks to revolutionize home appraisals by leveraging technology including LIDAR and computer vision to produce reports in 24 hours instead of weeks.

“There was a really big knowledge gap I had going into this,” Ahmed said of the important boost he received at Waterloo. “What the Waterloo ecosystem helped with was being great connectors and introducing me to the right people at every stage.”
