A third-year undergraduate student has been selected as the Co-op Student of the Year for the Faculty of Engineering in 2022.
Jennifer Tsai, who is studying biomedical engineering, has received this award in recognition of her work at the University of British Columbia's Cembrowski Lab, where she investigated the anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN), a region of the brain critical to short-term memory.
Tsai mapped out the ATN's cellular and molecular landscape to further characterize its role in unresolved memory circuits.
“I’m curious about understanding the basis of learning and memory-related disorders such as autism and Alzheimer’s," said Tsai. "At the Cembrowski Lab, I was able to study the genomic patterns and markers involved in such diseases on a single-cell level by leveraging big data analysis, engineering and computational tools."
Winners for all six faculties were announced today by Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE) at the University of Waterloo's Student of the Year Awards reception.
"As evidenced by the many accomplishments of our recipients, and all of Waterloo’s co-op students, this experiential education foundation continues to flourish. The impressive accomplishments of our co-op students of the year are a testament to their hard work and dedication," said Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor.
