Several members and former members of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received awards and recognition this June.

Dr. Giovanni Cascante, Dr. Liping Fu
, and Dr. Susan Tighe were honoured at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) Annual Conference. Dr. Reinhold Schuster was presented with an award at the 2024 Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) Expo.

Ujwal Zore, a graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the Michael R. Provart Environmental Award by the Ontario Water Works Association.

The award recognizes an Ontario university student, graduate or undergraduate, for excellence in presenting research at Ontario’s Water Conference and Trade Show. 

A team of five Indigenous students from Waterloo Engineering participated in the First Nations Launch, an annual high-power rocket competition sponsored by NASA’s Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium (WSGC), designed to provide a unique aerospace learning experience.  

It was the team’s first time taking part in the competition which involved designing, building and launching a high-powered model rocket carrying cargo to an apogee of 2000 feet. 

Two Waterloo Engineering graduates from the class of 2024 have made The Logic's Top Prospects list of emerging leaders in the innovation economy.   

Helen Charlotte Engelhardt (BASc ‘24, nanotechnology) and Zoey Zhang (BASc ‘24, biomedical engineering) were named in the publication as rising stars for their work solving challenges and championing initiatives that advance inclusion in engineering. 

Dr. James Bookdbinder was the recipient of the 2024 Award of Merit from the Canadian Operational Research Society.

The Award of Merit is presented annually to a current or past member of CORS in recognition of significant contributions to the profession of operational research.

Dr. Kankar Bhattacharya is the 2024 recipient of the P.D. Ziogas Electric Power Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Canada.

The medal won by Bhattacharya recognizes outstanding Canadian engineers who have made important contributions to the field of electric power engineering.

A team from the Department of Management Science and Engineering won first place in Canadian Operational Research Society’s Undergraduate Student Paper Competition.

Claudia De Fazio, Anika Gapczynski, Chloe Pilon, Kayley Brash, Michaela Trevisan received the award for their paper titled, “Inventory Slotting Optimization for Stable Palletization in Distribution Centres”.

Researchers from the University of Waterloo and McMaster University have developed a pain-free, wearable sensor that can continuously monitor critical health indicators and send results to a smartphone or other device.

Waterloo Engineering professor Dr. Mahla Poudineh from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering worked with McMaster’s Dr. Leyla Soleymani, professor of Engineering Physics, to create the Wearable Aptalyzer.

Waterloo Engineering Outreach has been awarded a new round of NSERC PromoScience grant funding from the Government of Canada to grow its Empowering Access to STEM programming.  

The $540,000 in funding over three years allows for the continued expansion of STEM learning opportunities for Black and Indigenous youth, girls and non-binary youth, youth with disabilities and youth facing socioeconomic challenges. In 2023, Waterloo Engineering Outreach programming reached over 30,000 youth. 

As a first-year student in the Faculty of Engineering, Arden Song joined EngiQueers, a group that provides an environment of mutual support for 2SLGBTQIA+ engineering students.

Song took on a leadership role with EngiQueers, helping the organization keep going through the pandemic.
