Ujwal Zore, a graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the Michael R. Provart Environmental Award by the Ontario Water Works Association.

The award recognizes an Ontario university student, graduate or undergraduate, for excellence in presenting research at Ontario’s Water Conference and Trade Show.

The Ontario Water Works Association is at the forefront of research, technology and policy development with respect to safe, sufficient, and sustainable drinking water. Members are involved in all facets of the delivery of safe drinking water. The organisation meets annually to recognize excellence and achievement in the drinking water industry.

Zore presented his winning paper, titled “Performance of intermittently operated biofilters for manganese removal from groundwater after a prolonged shutdown, at the 2024 conference held in Niagara Falls, Ontario. His research focuses biofiltration technology—a sustainable approach for drinking water treatment—specifically targeting manganese removal. This work aims to enhance the practicality of intermittently operated biofilters for manganese removal, particularly in smaller Canadian communities with lower water demand. The paper drew from Zore’s master’s thesis research, supervised by Dr. Peter Huck and Dr. Sigrid Peldszus.

Zore received a prize of $1000 for his successful presentation. The last time a University of Waterloo student won the award was in 2017
