Several members and former members of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received awards and recognition this June.
Dr. Giovanni Cascante, Dr. Liping Fu, and Dr. Susan Tighe were honoured at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) Annual Conference. Dr. Reinhold Schuster was presented with an award at the 2024 Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) Expo.
CSCE is a not-for-profit learned society created to develop and maintain high standards of civil engineering practice in Canada and to enhance the public image of the civil engineering profession. The Annual Conference brings together civil engineers from across Canada to present new research and discuss developments in the field.
The CSCE award gala saw success for three Civil and Environmental Engineering affiliated faculty. Cascante was inducted as a CSCE Fellow. Fu received the Best Paper award, shared with the team of student researchers who supported the project. Finally, Tighe was the recipient of the inaugural Ralph Haas Award. Tighe, now Provost and Vice President at McMaster University, was a professor in the department until 2020. The award she received is named after Ralph Haas, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Waterloo.
CFSEI comprises hundreds of structural engineers and other design professionals focused on producing safe and efficient designs for commercial and residential structures with cold-formed steel. The organization’s Expo, held in Tucson, Arizona, saw Schuster receive the prestigious John P. Masten Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes the significant contributions of an individual who has volunteered time, talent and resources to the cold-formed steel industry.
