This June, members of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering took home three awards from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Canada Annual Conference.
There were awards for the University of Waterloo’s ITE student chapter and a scholarship for undergraduate Adriana Ceric (BASc ‘26, civil engineering).
ITE Canada (a division of ITE International which has over 18,000 members worldwide) is a volunteer-run membership association of over 2,000 transportation professionals and students. The organization provides opportunities for professional development and community building through conferences, training, publications, and involvement in projects and products advancing knowledge in the industry. The 2024 annual conference was hosted in Hamilton, Ontario, and saw hundreds of transportation professionals and students gather in person to connect and celebrate achievement.
The efforts of the Waterloo ITE student chapter (led by students from Civil and Environmental Engineering) were recognized at the conference, with the group receiving the Outstanding Student Chapter Award. The award is given to chapters who have made outstanding progress in advancing the objectives of ITE’s charter. There was further success for the Waterloo team when the ITE Southwestern Ontario section won the Section Momentum Award. The Momentum Award recognizes those Sections who have demonstrated notable, overall improvement. As key members of the Section, this award reflects the achievements and growth of the Waterloo chapter.
The executive team for the Waterloo ITE Student Chapter is comprised of Chris Lehmann Skelton (President), Mavjot Kaur (Vice President), Lucas Tito P Sobreira (Treasurer), Jeffrey Dai (Secretary), Shrinidhi Elangovanneela (Events Director) and William Pham (Media Director). Former Chapter President Reza Aminghafouri was also a part of the group who accepted the award. The faculty chapter advisor is Dr. Chris Bachmann, who also sits on the Southwestern Ontario Section Executive as the Student Liaison.
The conference also featured individual success for Adriana Ceric, who received the ITE Canada Undergraduate Scholarship. The scholarship, worth $3,000, is intended to generate interest for undergraduate studies in the field of transportation. Students are required to submit a technical paper related to the field of transportation to be judged by the award panel. Ceric’s award-winning submission was based on her co-op work term report.
