Siemens Canada Ltd. and the University of Waterloo will partner on a new youth training and skills development initiative to expand Canada’s capacity and research excellence in advanced manufacturing.

The partnership will address the challenges facing the global economy including digital manufacturing – challenges to which Siemens’ expertise and product portfolio are ideally and uniquely suited.

On Saturday, May 31, the Sedra Student Design Centre hosted the third annual Waterloo High School Electric Vehicle (EV) Challenge, providing young students with the opportunity to not only race, but design an build electric cars as a team.  More than that, the teams get experience with hands-on problem solving.

A state-of-the-art lab designed for research programs ranging from photonics to quantum computing to nanoelectronics opened its doors on June 4.

The Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facility, located in the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, is a high-end research and development lab with production capabilities.

A University of Waterloo startup launched to commercialize an invention by Costas Tzoganakis, a chemical engineering professor, has been named one of the 2014 TiE50 winners. The prestigious TiE Silicon Valley honour is awarded to only 50 companies among thousands competing worldwide.

Parthipan Siva, a Waterloo systems design engineering alumnus, and Alexander Wong, Canada Research Chair in Medical Imaging Systems and co-Director of the Vision and Image Processing Research Group in the systems design engineering department, were honoured with the Best Vision Paper Award at the 11th Conference on Computer and Robot Vision held May 7-9 in Montreal.

Val Chibisov, an electrical and computer engineering student, has been selected as one of just five Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Product Fellows out of 2500 applicants for the program from 200 universities across the U.S and Canada. Chibisov is the only student from a Canadian university to be chosen.

Venture capitalist, Waterloo Engineering graduate and former Facebook executive Chamath Palihapitiya returned to the University of Waterloo on May 9 to announce a new Social Capital Fellows program that will pair top Waterloo engineering students with innovative startups in Silicon Valley.   

Faizul Mohee, a civil engineering doctoral candidate, has been honoured with the inaugural Ontario Society of Professional Engineers President’s Award in the Young Professional category. The award recognizes an exceptional Ontario Engineer who has served as an advocate for the engineering community through various roles during academic studies and following graduation.
