Susan Tighe will break new ground when she takes over next month as president of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering for an elected one-year term.

A professor of civil and environmental engineering, Tighe is the first person from the University of Waterloo and just the second woman ever to lead the 5,000-member organization in its 117-year history.

The University of Waterloo is building one of the largest university-based facilities in the world to advance additive manufacturing (AM) and help companies adopt AM processes for innovative and customized products.

Backed by nearly $27 million in cash and in-kind support, the lab will enable Canadian companies to tap the enormous potential of AM, commonly known as industrial 3D printing, while also further developing the technology through research.

After accepting a national science promotion award earlier this month, Waterloo Engineering’s Associate Dean of Outreach Mary Wells will receive another honour this week. On May 25th, Wells will be presented with the Engineers Canada's Support of Women in the Engineering Profession Award at their annual gala.

Seven Waterloo Engineering researchers have been awarded Early Research Awards. The announcement is part of larger investment by the Province of Ontario aimed at advancing Ontario’s competitive edge, and included 18 University of Waterloo researchers for a total of $2.5 million.

Each researcher will receive $140,000 over five years plus an additional $50,000 from the University. They are:
