Flora Ng, a chemical engineering professor and University Research Chair, has won the 2013 Canadian Green Chemistry and Engineering award in the individual category. The award is sponsored by GreenCentre Canada. Ng will be presenting the award lecture at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference to be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick in October 2013. Engineering students dominated the University of Waterloo men’s curling team that earned national gold with a 7-5 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Kamloops, B.C.

Skip Jake Walker, a fourth-year electrical engineering student, second Jordan Moreau, a management engineering student, third Edward Cyr, a mechanical engineering master's student, and alternate Nathan Ransom, an undergraduate mechanical engineering student, and other members of the team, captured top spot in the 2013 Men’s Curling Championship in a rematch of last year's finals.

Alison Brooks (BES ’85 and BARCH ‘88, Arch) has been named Woman Architect of the Year by the prestigious Architects Journal, one of the top international architecture periodicals published in London, England. Brooks, who founded Alison Brooks Architects in London, was recently honoured as Outstanding Architect in England.

Rick Haldenby, director of Waterloo's School of Architecture, calls Brooks' work "exceptional" and says it's  hard to think of any other architect who has received such recognition. [eWEAL article]

Micaala Seth captured gold at 2013 University/College Squash Championship held the first weekend of March at the University of Toronto.The fourth-year chemical engineering student earned first place in the Women's Open after beating her opponent 3-0 in the finals. 
 
Overall, the Waterloo Warriors team brought home two gold medals, one  silver medal, and a bronze medal. The silver medal was won by Cameron Seth, who is a Waterloo math student and Micaala's brother.

Wired article features alumni startup

According to Wired magazine, wearable computers are the way of the future, and University of Waterloo alumni are leading the R&D race.

Co-founder of Thalmic Labs, Stephen Lake (BASc, mechatronics), discussed the launch of Myo, the startup’s gesture control armband in a recent article published in Wired, saying the device “will one day control computers, smartphones, gaming consoles, and remote-control devices with simple hand gestures.”

A Waterloo Engineering research project that will lead to lighter and stronger automotive components will receive substantial funding from Automotive Partnership Canada (APC). The project is one of five that will benefit from a total of $21.4 million in APC support that was announced February 22.

A research project that may significantly boost clean biofuel production in Canada is among three Waterloo Engineering initiatives to receive funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
