Zhou Wang elected to RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professor Zhou Wang is one of the new cohort of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The 48 new members, who were nominated by 51 Canadian universities and the National Research Council, represent the emerging generation of scholarly, scientific and artistic leadership in Canada.

a 2014 recipient of the prestigious NSERC Steacie Memorial Fellowship, is internationally recognized for his ground-breaking work on perceptual image quality assessment and processing, and is one of the most frequently cited authors in these areas.  His award-winning publications have received high numbers of citations by academic researchers and industrial practitioners, making him among the world’s most frequently cited authors in the field of image processing.  His paper on structural similarity (SSIM) method has led to a paradigm change in perceptual image quality assessment and processing.

Two other University of Waterloo professors, Karen Collins of the Faculty of Arts and David Hammond of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, are also new members of RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.          

The role of the members is to address issues of particular concern to new scholars, artists and scientists, for the advancement of understanding and the benefit of society, taking advantage of the interdisciplinary approaches fostered by the establishment of the college.

The College is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of leaders,” said RSC President Graham Bell. “Together, the members of the College will be in a position to provide guidance on issues of importance to Canadians, and to promote Canadian achievements in the arts, humanities and sciences around the world.”

The induction ceremony for the 2015 cohort will take place  November 27 at RSC’s General Annual Meeting in Victoria, BC.
