Information for

John Bell will speak in Waterloo

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

What a treat to have three evenings to spend with John Bell!

says Ed Janzen, Conrad Grebel University College Chaplain.

John Bell, an Iona Community resource worker, is based in Glasgow and works with his colleagues in the areas of music, worship, and spirituality. He lectures, preaches, and conducts seminars across the world. He is a hymn writer, author, and occasional broadcaster on national radio and television, but retains a primary passion for congregational song. He will be in Waterloo from October 2-4 as part of a lecture series sponsored by Conrad Grebel and the Institute for Worship and the Arts.

While this series of seminars builds in a general way on Bell's passion for vital congregational singing, each evening will offer a unique aspect.  According to Janzen, in a time when war and suffering are so much a part of our concern, the seminar on "The Lost Tradition of Lament" will encourage us as we learn how to share our concern with one another before God. "Singing with Integrity" will inspire us as we seek our way in a rich a diverse global community. "What shall we sing tomorrow?" is a seminar especially for youth, young adults and their leaders to think about worship in tomorrow's church and how we might base it on the experiences and knowledge we gather today. Janzen said,

We are excited to offer these seminars by someone with such a depth of global experience and obvious love of God as John Bell. This will be an opportunity not to be missed!

The Iona Community, founded in 1938 is an ecumenical Christian community committed to seeking new ways of living the Gospel in today’s world. The Community remains committed to rebuilding the common life, through working for social and political change, striving for the renewal of the church with an ecumenical emphasis, and exploring new more inclusive approaches to worship, all based on an integrated understanding of spirituality.
