Grebel Fund - Orchestra

Support the Orchestra@Waterloo

The Orchestra is part of the University of Waterloo's Music Department, housed at Conrad Grebel University College, and adds a rich musical experience to the lives of so many students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Creating music together in vocal and instrumental ensembles fosters a strong sense of community by bringing individuals together in a shared goal of artistic expression.  Singing and playing together requires open ears to listen and respond to those near you, with the pursuit of creating something that is bigger than yourself.

There is a special bond that starts when musicians breathe together, listen to each other, and create together, regardless of background, academic pursuits, or experience. There is a spirit of unity and belonging that extends beyond the music itself.

- Mark Vuorinen, Associate Professor of Music, Chair of Music Department

“In 2004, when we started Orchestra@UWaterloo, we had a conductor, Erna Van Daele, and a concertmaster, new faculty member Romy Shioda, but really nothing else — no budget and no rehearsal space. Luckily, Catharine Scott, Associate Provost of Human Resources and Student Services, was willing to support me — a computer science prof with the unlikely ambition to manage an orchestra,” reflected Anna Lubiw, one of the professors who started Orchestra@UWaterloo.
