Grebel Fund - Kindred Centre for Peace Advancement

The support of Grebel alumni and donors has been particularly crucial for start-ups in the Grebel Peace Incubator.

The mission of the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement is to advance expansive and innovative understandings and practices of peace locally and globally. We have seen countless examples of how the efforts of our participants and partners have touched the lives of neighbours near and far.

The support of Grebel alumni and donors has been particularly crucial for start-ups in the Grebel Peace Incubator. Recent examples include grants that enabled Peace for All Canada to use dialogue circles to connect and empower diverse newcomer communities in Waterloo region, and Findsuri to grow their team of volunteers who help Syrian families search for missing loved ones through their online platform.

On May 27, Fiona Li earned the second-place prize at the Map the System Canada competition in Calgary, Alberta. As the winner of the University of Waterloo’s Map the System campus finals, Fiona’s achievement on the national stage not only brought awareness to the over-representation of Indigenous women in Canadian prisons, but it also highlighted how programs like Peace and Conflict Studies are crucial in furthering education on how to research, understand, and present these critical issues.

Reimagining Research

by Paul Heidebrecht, Director, Kindred Credit Union for Peace Advancement

Research is an important way we can better understand—and take action on—the growing number of challenges our world faces in building peace. As the Centre for Peace Advancement’s dynamic community of participants continues to evolve, we look forward to growing our research capacity and impact.

Grebel has affected my idea of connection by teaching me the importance of having diverse perspectives. In the PeaceTech Living-Learning Community we have members from every faculty and I find that having those different backgrounds really enriches the discussions we have.

My favourite thing about the PeaceTech Living-Learning Community is the diversity in people that it brings together. At the same time, PeaceTechers are united by a shared desire to use their degrees to do good in the world. At a time where it can feel like the headlines are consistently negative, it is uplifting to know that there are so many people guided by a desire to create a better world.
