Marcus Shantz Reappointed to Third Term as Grebel President
“On behalf of the Grebel Board of Governors,” said Board Chair Donny Cheung, “I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Marcus Shantz for a third term as President of Conrad Grebel University College. Marcus is a visionary, ethical, and effective leader who deeply understands and embodies Grebel’s unique identity and mission.”

“Marcus has been praised throughout the Grebel community for his wise and steady leadership and his broad and transparent approach to both the day-to-day management and long-term stewardship of the College,” added Cheung. “He has been a stabilizing force in the current fiscal climate and earned widespread endorsement for another term from the Grebel Board, faculty, staff, and students.”
During his second term, Shantz successfully executed Grebel’s 2022-25 strategic plan and strengthened external relationships. In particular, he was instrumental in negotiating a new framework agreement between the University of Waterloo and the Affiliated and Federated Institutions of Waterloo, and a renewed MOU with Mennonite Church Eastern Canada. He oversaw major capital improvements and managed key administrator transitions while maintaining momentum on Grebel’s strategic priorities. Shantz is recognized as a highly effective leader in development and has built strong relationships with Grebel’s alumni and donors, as evidenced by the success of the $4M+ residence renewal campaign.
In keeping with Grebel’s culture of hospitality, Shantz is credited with nurturing a highly collaborative and inviting college environment. Staff and students alike appreciate his approachability and presence around the lunch table or at Community Supper. He is an engaging public speaker and speaks with clarity, humility, and inspiration at events ranging from convocations to worship services.
“The most rewarding part of this work is helping to create an environment in which students can grow as whole persons,” remarked Shantz. “Universities rightly focus on knowledge and skills, but places like Grebel also help shape character, habits of community, and the capacity to face the world with both confidence and kindness. It is a privilege to work with colleagues who care deeply about that kind of education and to see our graduates carry it into the world.”
“Marcus continues to be the right person to lead Grebel and advance the College’s long-term goals in the coming years,” added Cheung. “He has built significant trust among faculty and staff and has positioned the College for continued success. The Board looks forward to partnering with Marcus as the College navigates the challenges ahead.”
Shantz has served Grebel as president since October 2017. He begins a six-month sabbatical leave from July 1 to December 31, 2026, during which Troy Osborne will serve as Acting President. Shantz will return in January 2027 to complete his current term, which concludes in July 2028, when he will begin his third five-year term.
