Electrical hazards
Electrical hazards exist in every workplace. It is important that all work is conducted with electrical safety in mind and that equipment adheres to electrical codes. Review the Electrical Safety Certification page before purchasing electrical devices.
Electrical Safety Program
The Electrical Safety Program applies to all University of Waterloo employees.
Under the Ontario Health and Safety Act, a competent person is defined as:
-
is qualified because of knowledge, training and experience to organize the work and its performance,
-
is familiar with this Act and the regulations that apply to the work, and
-
has knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.
At UW, only qualified electrical workers (QEWs), task qualified workers (TQWs) and qualified operations workers (QOWs) as defined in the Electrical Safety Program are permitted to do electrical work tasks greater than 30V AC, 60 V DC.
All non-electrical workers need to abide by Policy 22.
Training
All University of Waterloo employees are encouraged to take the Electrical Awareness (SO2033) training module.
