Hearing Conservation - Awareness (SO1065-O)

Purpose

This course provides University employees guidance on working safely in noisy environments. 

Who should take this course?

  • Employees working in any of the following shops or areas:

    • Vehicle Shop

    • Maintenance Shops

    • Student Machine Shops

    • Engineering Machine Shops

    • Science Technical Services

    • Central Plant

    • Grounds

  • Employees who work in any of the following occupations:

    • Plumbers

    • Carpenters

    • Electricians

    • Gas Fitters

    • HVAC Technicians

  • Employees whose risk has been assessed to involve exposure to noisy tools, processes, or environments (e.g., CEE technicians who work with concrete)

1 hour

Training content

This training covers the following basic concepts associated with understanding and evaluating noise exposure: 

  • The definition of sound and noise
  • Why we use the decibel as a unit to measure sound exposure
  • Why frequency is considered when determining noise exposure
  • Occupational noise exposure limits
  • Using the hierarchy of controls to reduce noise exposures
  • The University of Waterloo’s processes related to noise and hearing conservation
