Faculty openings in Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo welcomes applications for two tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2023. Note, for exceptional candidates, an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor will be considered.  All applicants must have earned a PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, by the date of appointment.

According to Maclean’s 2022 University Rankings, Waterloo is ranked 1st in Canada for most innovative University.  Waterloo Engineering is ranked 2nd in Canada according to US News Global University Rankings 2021.

The ECE Department has a long and successful history of applying AI to a range of multidisciplinary problems. ECE is part of a vibrant AI research and industrial community that tackles many of the most challenging problems in foundational and applied AI and ML including its social, ethical, and policy implications. Foundational areas include probabilistic and causal reasoning, reinforcement learning, anomaly detection, computer vision, and deep learning.

We encourage applications from candidates working in the broad area of artificial intelligence on a topic with significant engineering applications. Application areas of interest include, but are not limited to, health care technologies, autonomous vehicles, energy systems, natural language processing, security, assistive robotics, cognitive and social robotics.

Institutes and facilities, including the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute (Waterloo.AI), the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation (WICI), and RoboHub, provide unique opportunities for collaboration across campus. Waterloo.AI was founded in 2018 and is dedicated to fostering and promoting research in all aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Waterloo.AI consists of over 200 professors and their research associates, spanning all six faculties at the University of Waterloo and more than 35 departments and schools. The Waterloo RoboHub facility brings together over 45 faculty members solving problems in advanced robotics, autonomous systems, human-robot interaction, and related fields.

Successful applicants are expected to be, or to have demonstrated the potential to be, leaders in their research and are expected to actively engage in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, supervise graduate students and to contribute to the overall development of the Department.

Based on qualifications and rank hired, annual salary will typically range from $125,000 to $175,000. For exceptionally qualified candidates, a higher annual salary will be considered. The successful candidate will be required to have an engineering license for practice in Canada or must be able to apply for an engineering license or limited engineering license within five years.

The department currently has more than 95 faculty members and is one of the largest engineering departments in Canada.
