(b) Advanced Manufacturing PhD Fellowships
These Fellowships are valued at $160,000 ($40,000 per year over 4 years) and can only be held by students carrying out research in the area of Advanced Manufacturing.
Advanced manufacturing is the use of innovative technologies such as analytics and automation, rapid prototyping and 3D printing, materials joining and robotics to increase efficiency in the manufacturing process. If you are interested in learning more about the Advanced Manufacturing research happening at Waterloo Engineering, consider reviewing the following facilities: Centre for Intelligent Antennas and Radio Systems, Forming and Crash Lab, Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing, Centre for Advanced Materials Joining and WatCar Manufacturing.
(c) Entrance Awards
In addition to the awards above, the Faculty of Engineering will offer up to 40 Entrance Awards (valued at $5,000) to highly qualified applicants.
To be eligible for these Fellowships and Awards, applicants must have submitted a complete application to their program of choice by the application deadline, i.e. February 1 (for Fall). Applicants are also strongly encouraged to submit an application for OGS/QEII-GSST by the same deadline.
How to be considered
There is no separate application process for PhD Fellowships or the entrance awards. Eligible applicants will automatically be considered and students will be notified in their offer letter.
Tri-Agency (NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC) award recipients will continue to receive the President’s Graduate Scholarship top-up.
There are two components to the top-up:
- from UWaterloo centrally, valued at $10,000 in year 1, and then $5,000 annually for the duration of your Tri-Agency award, and
- from Faculty of Engineering, valued at $15,000 in year 1 ($10K PGS Match + $5K Dean's Entrance Award), and then $10,000 annually for the duration of your Tri-Agency award.
Any Fellowship recipients holding an Tri-Agency award shorter than their program time limit (i.e. 12 terms for PhD2) will continue to receive the fellowship in their final terms.
