Meet Kathrine von Friedl!
Hey! I'm Kat von Friedl and I'm in my 3A term of Mechatronics Engineering here at UWaterloo. I'm an adventurer, techie-wannabe, patch collector, and otherwise family & friend oriented person. I love cooking and doing fun beverage creations, and lately, I've been most involved with the community at the Engineering Society @uwengsoc.
What is your role with EngSoc and what is EngSoc?
EngSoc is a student-run group that represents the undergraduate engineering community to WUSA, our faculty, government, etc. EngSoc advocates on behalf of students, owns and operates the Engineering Coffee & Donut shops, makes student-accessible resources like the exam bank, and hosts a variety of fun events! My role as EngSoc president is to ensure the overall smooth functioning of the Society, represent the student voice in a variety of meetings, support the executive team and work closely with contacts in the Dean's office and EngSoc's business manager, Mary Bland. We're not your average student body government. EngSoc is completely voluntary, often really hype, and community building.
What is student life like at Waterloo? How has it changed online?
Student life is what you make of it. There are so many amazing things to get involved in: EngSoc, our student newspaper, societies, conferences, clubs, sports, hacking communities, international co-ops and more! Moving online it may not be as visible to interact with all of these but don't let that discourage you. Explore and search around to see what's offered.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I love meeting folks and other students! Feel free to connect with me, come by our EngSoc discord, or swing by our office called the Orifice when we reopen soon!
