Tony Capel (BASc ’70 and MASc ’73, electrical engineering) is the recipient of the 2021 Lord Kelvin Award from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The Lord Kelvin Award, the highest honour given by the IEC, recognizes exceptional and long-term individual contributions to the standardization of the electrotechnical industry globally.
Capel is the 37th laureate to receive the tribute and the first from Canada.
The award takes its name from the first IEC President who was a distinguished scientist and prolific inventor. Lord Kelvin contributed significantly to the advancement of modern physics and the practical applications of electrotechnology.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
