James Craig, a civil and environmental engineering professor at Waterloo Engineering, has been named a Canada Research Chair and awarded $500,000 in research funding over five years.
Craig and his research team are involved in the development and application of new modelling approaches to deal with problems in both groundwater and surface water systems.
They aim to make those tools and techniques accessible and useful to consultants, educators and regulators.
Craig’s new chair in Hydrologic Modelling and Analysis was one of six new or renewed chairs across the University recently announced by the federal government. Funding totalled $5.7 million.
Other research areas covered by the chairs include insurance risk processes, bioinformatics, quantum molecular dynamics, number theory, and philosophy and cognitive science.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
