Five companies co-founded by alumni of Waterloo Engineering have made a list of the top education technology companies in the world.
The list was published by Time Magazine based on a statistical analysis of thousands of companies in terms of their financial performance and industry impact.
Ranked 20th was ApplyBoard, which was co-founded by alumnus Martin Basiri (MASc ’13, mechanical and mechatronics engineering). Passage, a second company co-founded by Basiri, was listed at number 41.
Prodigy, co-founded by Rohan Mahimker and AlexPeters (both BASc ’11, mechatronics engineering) ranked 69th, Top Hat, co-founded by Mike Silagaze (BASc ’07, electrical engineering) and Mohen Shahini (PhD ’11, mechanical engineering), was 183rd and D2L, co-founded by John Baker (BASc ’00, systems design engineering), was 210th.
“As technology continues to advance, tech companies have pounced upon the opportunity to bring education systems around the world up to speed with the ever-more connected digital world and the proliferation of new tools like generative AI,” Time said in a story on the rankings.
