The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) will induct two Waterloo professors as 2024 EIC fellows.
Dr. David Clausi, director of the Vision and Image Processing Research Lab and Associate Dean of Research and External Partnerships, and Dr. Carolyn Ren, director of Waterloo Microfluidics Laboratory, were recognised for their exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada.
The EIC was founded in 1887 and recognises excellence in engineering while assuring standards through the accreditation of continuing education credits. EIC fellowships are awarded by the council of the institute for excellence in engineering and services to the profession and society.
Clausi completed his PhD at Waterloo in 1996 and returned to the faculty as as an assistant professor in 1999. His research interests are in the fields of computer vision, image processing, and pattern recognition with an emphasis on radar and biomedical imagery. He currently co-leads the Waterloo Vision and Image Processing Lab, a research group that is dedicated to using artificial intelligence to find solutions for outstanding problems in visual processing and perception.
Ren has been part of the engineering faculty since 2004. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Microfluidic Technologies and pursues projects focused on developing microfluidics enabled wearable technologies and water quality monitoring and infectious disease diagnosis, among others.
