Engineering teams get traction at Concept pitch event

Two teams featuring Waterloo Engineering students took home $5,000 each at the recent Concept $5K pitch competition for spring 2021.

House AI and Maesos were among four winners at the virtual event, with one of the winners, MedAtlas, collecting an additional $5,000 for the top health-related idea.

Featuring computer engineering student Adam Lam, House AI is developing data analytics solutions to help hospitals and other healthcare institutions improve workflow while also saving lives and money.

Maesos, which is made up of mechatronics engineering students Brandon Chan, Jack Paduchowski and Kurtis Eisler, is developing an Internet of Things monitoring network to optimize agricultural management, maximize yield and limit damage.

Six other finalists

Eight of 10 teams in the finals of the thrice-yearly event had members from Waterloo Engineering. The other six were AIpaca, ASPx, Emre, Keystroke, MicroBuild Masonry and Scena 360.

MedAtlas is working to simplify access to healthcare specialists in Africa via telemedicine solutions. The fourth winner, SAFI, is developing a portable, inexpensive, simple pasteurization kit for herders in Kenya to clean milk and prevent the spread of deadly illnesses.

Concept is an experiential entrepreneurship and pre-incubator program at the University of Waterloo. It is provided by Velocity, an incubator for early stage, pre-seed startup companies.
