The University of Waterloo's Department of Chemical Engineering is powering research discovery across campus and beyond with its Analytical Lab Facilities.
The lab gives Waterloo researchers, external academic institutions, industry partners and startups access to instrumentation and technical staff expertise to support research projects.
"Our goal is to lower the barriers to high-level research," says Dr. Charles Dal Castel, the lab's director. "By providing access to advanced instrumentation and expert support, we can give researchers the tools they need to accelerate discovery."
The lab’s equipment includes instruments for materials characterization and chemical analysis, including atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, HPLC and mass spectrometry. Work supported through the facility spans sustainable energy, biomaterials, advanced manufacturing, environmental monitoring and remediation, plastic upcycling and PFAS analysis.
In addition to supporting research, revenue generated through the Analytical Lab Facilities helps fund co-op student positions, providing valuable lab training for both undergraduate and graduate students.
