A startup company with deep roots at Waterloo Engineering has secured $350,000 in seed funding to commercialize technology for the gaming industry.
Brink Bionics was co-founded by Ning Jiang, a professor of systems design engineering, Erik Lloyd, who earned a master’s degree in systems design engineering in 2019, and Jiayuan He, a postdoctoral researcher in Jiang’s Engineering Bionics Lab.
Based in Kitchener-Waterloo, the company develops bionic arms, machine learning and brain-computer interfaces to improve gaming performance.
Its first product, a wearable glove called Impulse, enables users to execute time-critical game commands more quickly by connecting directly to their nervous systems.
The investment was led by RiSC Capital of Toronto.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
