Long-time faculty member heads MME

A Waterloo mechanical and mechatronics engineering (MME) professor started as chair of the department at the beginning of 2021.

Michael Collins, who joined the University of Waterloo in 2002, is the director of its Solar Thermal Research Laboratory. His research expertise

includes photovoltaics, energy conservation in buildings, energy efficiency and energy storage.

Faculty member Michael Collins is the new chair of Waterloo's mechanical and mechatronics engineering department.

Collins' research activities and findings have been featured in approximately 80 publications.

The past associate chair of MME’s undergraduate studies, Collins holds a BASc from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a master’s and doctorate from Queen’s University, all in mechanical engineering.  

He succeeds Jan Huissoon as chair of MME.
