The Faculty of Engineering community is mourning the loss of a professor whose pioneering work in biomedical optics advanced both science and clinical practice.
Kostadinka Bizheva, known as Dida to her colleagues and friends, was cross-appointed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the School of Optometry and Vision Science, with her main appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. For many years, she taught ECE 105: Classical Mechanics, supporting thousands of undergraduate students in electrical and computer engineering.
She founded the Biomedical Optics Research Group and initiated the field of optoretinography, a non-invasive method of measuring physiological and metabolic changes in the retina’s photoreceptors. Earlier this year, she was named a 2025 Optica Fellow in recognition of her lifetime achievements in optics and imaging.
