The Faculty of Engineering has announced the appointment of Dr. Christopher Nielsen as its next associate dean, graduate studies and postdoctoral affairs. His three-year term begins on September 1, 2025.
A professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Nielsen brings extensive experience in graduate education, having most recently served as associate chair, graduate studies in ECE. He is known for his collaborative leadership and strong commitment to enhancing the graduate student experience.
“I’ve learned a lot from working closely with students and colleagues in my department, and I’m looking forward to continuing that work at the Faculty level,” said Nielsen. “This role is a chance to listen, understand what’s working and where there’s room to improve, and support the efforts already underway across Waterloo Engineering.”
Nielsen’s appointment follows the conclusion of Dr. Siva Sivoththaman’s six-year term in the role. Widely respected for his thoughtful and steady leadership, Sivoththaman helped shape several key initiatives aimed at advancing graduate education at Waterloo Engineering.
During his tenure, the Faculty launched several new graduate programs, including the collaborative Master of Engineering program in Health Technologies and the graduate program in Biomedical Engineering. He also led the creation of the Engineering Graduate Studies Student Advisory Committee (EGSSAC), a forum for student input and consultation that continues to inform policy and program development.
“Dr. Sivoththaman’s impact is evident in the breadth of work he led and supported,” said Dean Mary Wells. “He approached the role with care, patience and a focus on collaboration that has made a lasting difference for our students and programs.”
The Faculty thanks Dr. Sivoththaman for his leadership and welcomes Dr. Nielsen as he steps into his new role.
