New medical therapy earns entrepreneurship award

The co-founder of a startup company based on research at Waterloo Engineering won a $25,000 provincial award this week for student entrepreneurs.

Chekema Prince, who earned her PhD in mechanical engineering at Waterloo in 2014, took home the Martin Walmsley Award for Entrepreneurship from the annual meeting of the Ontario Centres of Excellence in Toronto.

Along with working as a post-doctoral fellow and program manager at the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology on campus, Prince is co-founder and chief scientific officer at Pression Inc.

Presented by Reza Moridi, the provincial Minister of Research, Innovation and Science, the award recognized Prince for a “ground-breaking” compression therapy for vascular disease and increased muscle performance that was developed in partnership with the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Pression, which was spun off from the Second Heart research project, has new technology aimed at the prevention and treatment of blood clots, as well as reduced health-care costs.
