Palihapitiya cited as one of most influential Canadians

Chamath Palihapitiya, the outspoken venture capitalist, former social media executive and Waterloo Engineering alumnus, has made an annual list of the 50 most influential Canadians published by Maclean’s magazine.

Palihapitiya, who graduated from the electrical engineering program in 1999 before making his fortune at Facebook and as a founder of Social Capital, holds down the 33rd spot on the 2021 Maclean’s Power List.

“They may not always like what he has to say, but when Palihapitiya talks, people listen - perhaps because he uses market forces to put his massive wealth to work for the betterment of society,” the magazine said of Palihapitiya, a keynote speaker at the recent virtual Hack the North event.

“And he has nothing but praise for Canada, particularly when it comes to its social safety net and his alma mater, the University of Waterloo.
