A Waterloo Engineering professor was recognized internationally for advancing ultrasound technology used in medical imaging and therapeutic applications.

Dr. Alfred Yu, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and the University of Waterloo’s associate vice-president of partnerships, entrepreneurship and commercialization, recently received the 2025 Carl Hellmuth Hertz Award, presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for his extensive contributions to ultrasound imaging technology and therapeutic ultrasound.

The Carl Hellmuth Hertz Award is the highest career honour for ultrasonics researchers 10 to 25 years after completing a PhD. Yu, who relocated his research group to Waterloo from the University of Hong Kong in 2015, leads pioneering work in developing next-generation biomedical ultrasound innovations.

Beyond his research, Yu has held leadership roles in several major ultrasound societies and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control. He also directs the NSERC CREATE Program on Next-Generation Innovations in Ultrasonics (N-GENIUS) and is a research scientist at the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging.

He received the award at the 2025 International Ultrasonics Symposium, held September 15 to 18 in Utrecht, Netherlands.
