A Waterloo Engineering researcher has been recognized with one of the water industry's highest honours for her contributions to municipal water research and the advancement of the water profession.
Dr. Monica Emelko, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received the Norman J. Howard Award from the Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA), one of the association's highest honours. The award recognizes proficiency and leadership in key areas of municipal water supply, including design, construction, operation, maintenance, management, regulation and research, and celebrates those who have made significant contributions to ensuring safe, reliable and sustainable water systems. In her award citation, the OWWA highlighted her "...outstanding leadership, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to excellence across municipal water supply."
Emelko, a member of The Water Institute's Board of Directors and Canada Research Chair in Water Science, Technology and Policy, is known internationally for her research on how wildfires and other landscape disturbances affect drinking water security. Following the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, she partnered with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to assess risks to the Athabasca River drinking water supply and develop strategies to strengthen treatment resilience. She also leads the forWater Network, bringing together researchers, municipalities and Indigenous communities to strengthen drinking water resilience from source to tap.
