A Waterloo Engineering research team earned major international recognition for advancing multimodal approaches to continuous sign language understanding.
Electrical and computer engineeirng master’s student Md Rezwanul Haque and alum S. M. Taslim Uddin Raju (MASc ’25, electrical and computer engineering) earned recognition at the IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision 2025 for a paper supervised by Dr. Fakhri Karray. The team received the Best Poster Award and placed second in the Continuous Sign Language Recognition Challenge’s unseen sentences task.
Their work introduced a signer-invariant conformer and multi-scale fusion transformer that strengthened continuous sign language recognition, earning an additional Best Poster Award at the first Multimodal Sign Language Recognition Workshop held alongside the conference.
