A third-year mechatronics engineering student is the recipient of an award from a Canadian organization that champions women enrolled in engineering programs across the country.
Andrea Chakma received the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation’s 2021 Rona Hatt award named in memory of Hatt, the first known female Canadian chemical engineer.
Although the $5,000 Rona Hatt prize is intended for a woman in a Canadian chemical engineering program, Chakma qualified for it this year since no applications were received from chemical engineering students.
The foundation's annual Ambassador Awards program honours women in undergraduate programs who have demonstrated leadership activities and are active in their communities and in extracurricular activities.
Outside of the classroom, Chakma is an engineering ambassador for the Faculty, the outreach commissioner for the Engineering Society and the living learning community leader for Waterloo's Women in Engineering program. She is also a volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada.
