Two undergraduates at Waterloo Engineering recently completed co-op placements through an initiative led by Communitech to pair students with local businesses to work on artificial intelligence (AI) projects.
Bilal Alberzreh, who is studying systems design engineering, gained invaluable experience working for a construction company that files utility locates.
“I came in expecting the interesting part to be AI,” he said. “It turned out to be sitting close to a business and working out what’s actually worth building.”
Kanika Prajapati, a management engineering student, did her term at a furniture manufacturing company on a team that created an AI quoting engine to help reduce manual work on pricing.
“The quoting team can now input product specifications, and the engine uses previous products to output an approximate quote,” she said.
