Sergey Bogdanov, a Waterloo mechanical engineering doctoral candidate, won the best poster presentation at the International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials IX held September 16-21 in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The conference was attended by almost 200 experts from 58 countries. Bogdanov's work will be published in the form of a full-length paper in the International Journal of Fatigue Journal.

Kyrylo Cyril Rewa, a Waterloo civil engineering master’s student, has challenged some beliefs about cyclists in a study by the University of Waterloo and Waterloo Region that was presented June 26 among the opening sessions of Velo-city Global 2012 in Vancouver.

Engineering's alumni list officially increased June 16 with the convocation of 1,359 students in two ceremonies. Highlights included the first class of 40 management engineering students receiving their degrees. The management engineering program was established in 2007 to provide undergraduate students with the "engineering education required to understand, design, implement, and manage complex management systems upon which organizations depend."

Devon Rizzo, a second-year management engineering student, captured the women's title at the Canadian University/College Championship on June 1 at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C. Garrett Rank, a uWaterloo economics student, won the men's title. 

Both Waterloo Warriors won in thrilling fashion with Rizzo taking the title on the third playoff hole while Rank birdied four of his last six holes to win the championship by three strokes.

On Tuesday, April 3, the University of Waterloo's Baja SAE design team unveiled their 2012 all-terrain vehicle in Engineering's Student Design Centre. Designed over the Spring and Fall 2011 school terms and constructed between January and March, the car will take part in a competition in Portland, Oregon, from May 2-5, 2012.

For the second year in a row three of the four graduate students to win the  university's exceptional teaching award are from Waterloo Engineering. Arash Shahi of civil and environmental engineering, Andrea Murphy, of the School of Architecture, and Hamed Shateri of mechanical and mechatronics engineering will receive the Amit and Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching by a Student at spring convocation in June.  The other winner is Keith Delaney of earth and environmental sciences. [DB article]

Two recent civil engineering master's students have won the top 2012 American Water Works Association Academic Achievement Awards for their master's theses.  Ryan Snider placed first for his thesis entitled "Impact of Design and Operational Parameters on Rapid, Deep Bed Biological Filtration of Drinking Water." El-Hadidy, now a civil engineering doctoral candidate, took second place for his work entitled “Removal of Enteric Viruses by Ultrafiltration.” The prestigious awards that recognize academic excellence in the field of public water supply will be presented at the AWWA’s annual confere

Three Waterloo chemical engineering students beat out teams from across the country to win the first  Walmart Green Student Challenge on February 29 at the TMX Broadcast Centre in Toronto.

Ravi Mazumdar and his team of electrical and computer engineering researchers, including Shreyas Sundaram, Hiren Patel and Siddharth Garg, have received over $500,000 in funding from NSERC for cloud computing research they’re undertaking with Research in Motion.

Leading scientists from organizations worldwide, including the University of Waterloo, launched a new report on February 19 that offers real-world strategies for addressing the world’s energy challenges.
