Canada's current wetland protection efforts have overlooked how the environment naturally protects fresh-water resources from agricultural fertilizer contaminants, engineering researchers from the University of Waterloo's Water Institute have found.

The next big innovation to hit the marketplace could be among the Waterloo student projects on display at the annual Capstone Design symposia beginning March 16. 

Senior-year engineering students at Waterloo will exhibit projects ranging from a technology that reduces agricultural water waste through intelligent irrigation systems to a device that may help people with Parkinson`s disease avoid falls.

Six engineering researchers are receiving more than $3.3 million to partner with Canadian-based companies and government organizations on strategic research projects.

Waterloo Engineering ranked second in Canada in the 2015 Taiwan Ranking’s engineering field, and first for Chemical Engineering. The University of Waterloo also ranked in Canada’s top five for the Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering subjects.

Carl Haas, a Waterloo civil and environmental engineering professor, was recognized with the  American Society of Civil Engineer's 2015 Peurifoy Construction Research Award during the 2015 International Construction Specialty Conference held in Vancouver from June 8-10.

Waterloo Engineering women were honoured during March's National Engineering Month with a faculty member, two graduate students, and an alumna included as part of #30in30, an initiative that featured 30 outstanding women in engineering over 30 days.

Carl Haas, a civil and environmental engineering professor and the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Construction and Management of Sustainable Infrastructure, was inducted last month into the National Academy of Construction. The ceremony took in Scottsdale Arizona.
