Researchers at National Taiwan University have recognized the University of Waterloo as an impressive force among Canada’s engineering institutions. Waterloo Engineering ranked second in Canada in the 2015 Taiwan Ranking’s engineering field, and first for Chemical Engineering. The University of Waterloo also ranked in Canada’s top five for the Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering subjects.

Carl Haas, a Waterloo civil and environmental engineering professor, was recognized with the  American Society of Civil Engineer's 2015 Peurifoy Construction Research Award during the 2015 International Construction Specialty Conference held in Vancouver from June 8-10.

Waterloo Engineering women were honoured during March's National Engineering Month with a faculty member, two graduate students, and an alumna included as part of #30in30, an initiative that featured 30 outstanding women in engineering over 30 days.

Carl Haas, a civil and environmental engineering professor and the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Construction and Management of Sustainable Infrastructure, was inducted last month into the National Academy of Construction. The ceremony took in Scottsdale Arizona.

Making sure people are safe at a railway crossing involves considering everything from the condition of the road and railway, to accident history and speed of the traffic and trains.

The winners of this year's Waterloo Engineering awards were honoured at the annual Faculty of Engineering dinner held on October 10.

The Faculty’s Teaching Excellence Award recognizes outstanding teaching and commitment to the enrichment of Waterloo Engineering education. This year’s deserving recipients are David Brush of civil and environmental engineering, Keith Hipel of systems design engineering, and David Wang of electrical and computer engineering.

Musa Chunge, who will convocate with a BASc in civil engineering next month, has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which is one of the most prestigious international scholarships.   

Chunge was one of 51 recipients out of more than 3,500 applicants who were evaluated on criteria such as outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, commitment to improving the lives of others, and a good fit between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate program at Cambridge for which the individual applied.

Emily Peat, owner of EcoPlace Organics, took top honours at the Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards competition held in Ottawa March 27. This is the first time in six years that the University of Waterloo has taken the top prize at the national competition.

Peat, a current civil engineering undergraduate student and former University of Waterloo BET300 and E Co-op program participant, captured the award after winning first place in a campus-wide competition held in February at the Conrad Centre.
