Engineering students showcase Capstone Design Projects

The next big innovation to hit the marketplace could be among the Waterloo student projects on display at the annual Capstone Design symposia beginning March 16. 

Senior-year engineering students at Waterloo will exhibit projects ranging from a technology that reduces agricultural water waste through intelligent irrigation systems to a device that may help people with Parkinson`s disease avoid falls.

Graduate student wins cold-formed steel design contest

Taylor Porter, a Waterloo civil engineering master's candidate, won second place in the 2015 International Student Competition on Cold-formed Steel Design.

Competition participants were required to design a cold-formed steel clip angle for maximum nominal shear strength per unit weight with high fabrication feasibility. This is a design challenge they could see in the workplace.

Taiwan Ranking recognizes Waterloo's engineering excellence

Researchers at National Taiwan University have recognized the University of Waterloo as an impressive force among Canada’s engineering institutions. Waterloo Engineering ranked second in Canada in the 2015 Taiwan Ranking’s engineering field, and first for Chemical Engineering. The University of Waterloo also ranked in Canada’s top five for the Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering subjects.

Waterloo engineers named to new RSC college

Susan Tighe, a civil and environmental engineering professor, and Chris Eliasmith, a systems design engineering and philosophy professor, are among the inaugural 91 members of the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. 
Together, the members of the College will address issues of particular concern to new scholars, artists and scientists, for the advancement of understanding and the benefit of society, taking advantage of the interdisciplinary approaches fostered by the establishment of the College.
