The University of Waterloo, Canada’s leading innovation university, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, one of the world’s top engineering schools, will introduce dual doctoral degrees in engineering that will allow select students to simultaneously earn a PhD from each institution.

Electrical and computer engineering professor Zhou Wang has won an Engineering Emmy® Award for his co-creators of Structural Similarity (SSIM), a mathematical formula and computer algorithm that is now widely used throughout the television industry. 

The concepts of a quantum vacuum and quantum vacuum fluctuations are still not accepted by everyone. However, a group of researchers including the Institute of Quantum Computer's Christopher Wilson, a Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professor, has found further evidence that the two concepts are a reality.

Two Waterloo Engineering professors are panelists at this year’s RAPID Canada Conference taking place this week in Mississauga.

Pearl Sullivan, dean of engineering, and Ehsan Toyserkani, a mechanical and mechatronics engineering professor, are participating in the conference, an industry-leading forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments, trends and techniques specific to additive manufacturing, rapid technologies, and 3D printing.

Nafeesa Mahboob, an electrical and computer engineering doctoral canadiate, received the Basil Papadias Student Paper Award for the best student paper at the biannual IEEE PowerTech 2015 Conference held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

The paper was co-authored by her two doctoral supervisors Claudio Canizares and Catherine Rosenberg, both electrical and computer engineering professors. The award was presented with a plaque and 1000 euros.

Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professor Zhou Wang is one of the new cohort of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The 48 new members, who were nominated by 51 Canadian universities and the National Research Council, represent the emerging generation of scholarly, scientific and artistic leadership in Canada.

Two Schulich Leader Scholarship recipients are now first-year Waterloo Engineering students.  

Ella Rasmussen and Aaron Grenke have both joined the Faculty's mechanical and mechatronics engineering department.

A robotics competitor since Grade 6, Rasmussen co-founded and co-captained a team that took home 15 awards from regional, provincial, and international events in its 2013-2014 season.
