Smart meters and time-of-use electricity pricing have only modestly reduced residential demand during the most expensive peak periods, a new study suggests.

Engineering researchers at the University of Waterloo compared data for nine months before and nine months after time-of-use rates were introduced in November 2011 by an unidentified distribution company with more than 20,000 household customers in southwestern Ontario.

Susan Tighe will break new ground when she takes over next month as president of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering for an elected one-year term.

A professor of civil and environmental engineering, Tighe is the first person from the University of Waterloo and just the second woman ever to lead the 5,000-member organization in its 117-year history.

Seven Waterloo Engineering researchers have been awarded Early Research Awards. The announcement is part of larger investment by the Province of Ontario aimed at advancing Ontario’s competitive edge, and included 18 University of Waterloo researchers for a total of $2.5 million.
