Grand River Hospital (GRH) has formally activated its halogenated drug recovery (HDR) system, developed through a research initiative lead by Bill Anderson, professor of chemical engineering, and Class 1 Inc. of Cambridge. This new technology will help battle climate change as it captures waste anesthetic gases exhaled by patients undergoing surgery.

The University of Waterloo's innovative model of education received recognition today for its blend of hands-on learning, entrepreneurship, scholarship and professional training.

Exceptional students and alumni were honoured at the 2015 Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner held November 26.

From a company creating apparel that prevents sweat stains to another developing display technology that increases the battery life and daylight visibility of mobile devices, a range of startups led by engineering students and recent graduates took top awards during the Velocity Fund Finals (VFF) pitch competition event yesterday.

During the competition, 10 companies pitched their businesses to a panel of judges representing the investment, startup and business communities. Judges considered innovation, market potential, market viability and overall pitch.

Xuemin (Sherman) Shen became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada at the annual induction ceremony held in Victoria on November 27.

Shen received the prestigious honour along with three other professors from the University of Waterloo.

Researchers have developed a process to remove contaminants from oil sands wastewater using only sunlight and nanoparticles that is more effective and inexpensive than conventional treatment methods.

Catherine Burns is a new fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society recognizing outstanding achievement, consistently superior professional performance, exceptional contributions, personal service to the society, and other accomplishments.
