An Engineering faculty unlike any other
When you enter Engineering 7, look to the left and you will see a representation of the beginnings of the faculty of Engineering. Black and white photos in a collage spell the words "from the mud". As the University of Waterloo's founding faculty, Engineering was born in response to an industry need for engineers with applied skills. With just two portables to use as classrooms, the first group of students supplemented their engineering studies through hands-on application in what would become co-op education.

To this day, the faculty strives to innovatively match study with real-world implementation. From the student design groups housed in the Sedra Student Design Centre, to the Ideas Clinic, a flexible space where students take principles learned in the classroom and apply them to open-ended challenges. All students are enrolled in co-op and complete up to 2 years in the workforce before they graduate; in their final year of study, fourth year students devote substantial time, effort, and creativity to their Capstone Design project. Engineering also has robust graduate programs for Master's and PhD students, with expert-taught classes and supervision of cutting-edge research. The variety of Engineering graduate programs available extends from traditional course-based and research-based Master's and PhD programs to the unique Master's in Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology, which can even be done on a part-time basis.
The ideologies of Engineering's founding class carry on today and the result is well-rounded engineers who are knowledgeable, capable, and often entrepreneurial. University of Waterloo startups are set up for success with the University's IP policy. The University's policy states that except in certain well-defined situations, the ownership of IP rights rests with the creator(s) of the IP and has flexibility wherein sponsored research IP can be owned by industry sponsor. This policy is unique to most other academic institutions.
