Meet Sarah Meunier!
Hi! I am a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering. I teach courses in chemistry, chemical engineering concepts, numerical methods, bio-process engineering, and process and equipment design. I have undergraduate degrees in Chemical Engineering and Computing Technology from the University of Ottawa. My research interest is in designing and building reactors for environmental and biological processes. On a personal note, I love the outdoors – camping, fishing, hiking, boating, etc. I am from Newfoundland, so as long as I see water, I feel at home.
What is it like being a lecturer?
I love being a lecturer! I have the opportunity to really get to know our undergraduate students. I feel honoured to be a part of the education of so many students, and it is wonderful to watch them achieve great things in their careers.
What can incoming students expect with regards to Waterloo engineering?
Aspiring Waterloo Engineers can expect to be challenged as they never have been before. We push our students so hard because, when we do, they come up with the most amazing ideas, solutions, and design. Expect to be pushed. Expect to be challenged. Expect to be inspired. Expect to become more than you ever knew possible.
What other careers were you interested in while studying?
I started chemical engineering because I wanted to be a process engineer in the oil and gas industry. Starting my undergraduate studies, I had no idea how many doors my chemical engineering degree would open up. I am glad I had an open mind though, because I would never have predicted a career in academia!
What would you tell your university self knowing what you know now?
You learn more from failure than success. I was always ashamed when I did not accomplished what I set out to do in my first attempt. I have since learned that understanding what does not work is much more valuable than knowing what does work.
