Summer Student Custodian
Reports to: Building Operator

Conrad Grebel University College is a liberal arts college founded by the Mennonite church and affiliated with the University of Waterloo. The mission and programs of Grebel are rooted in and inspired by its Christian identity and its Anabaptist/Mennonite heritage. Grebel offers undergraduate, graduate, and community education programs in peace and conflict studies, music, theological and religious studies, and Mennonite studies. It also has a residence which houses 172 university students. Grebel is also home to the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement (CPA).
General Scope
This role involves performing a wide variety of custodial and service tasks, including providing vacation coverage for the regular custodial staff and assisting with preparations for summer conferences and rental groups.
Departmental Data
- Grebel’s total area of building space is 105,000 square feet.
- Grebel’s annual physical plant budget is $925,000.
- Currently, the college has four custodians.
- The residence houses 140 students and the adjacent apartment building provides accommodation to another 32 upper-year students.
- The academic program sees some 2000 students make use of its academic facilities each year.
- The custodians do approximately 300 room setups each year.
- Summer conferences and facility room rentals annually contribute $250,000.
Specific Responsibilities
- Providing vacation relief for the regular custodial staff which includes performing a variety of cleaning tasks such as washroom cleaning, vacuuming, floor mopping, garbage collection, etc.
- Room cleaning and bed-making for summer conferences
- Providing custodial supervision services to rental groups
- Performing special cleaning projects such as washing windows, washing walls, shampooingfurniture, etc.
- Performing special maintenance projects such as re-oiling furniture, painting, etc.
- Assisting with furniture and equipment moving
- Watering outdoor plants
- Performing other service tasks as time and skills permit, as assigned by the Building Operator
- Contributing to a hospitable and collegial climate for all members of the College community
Note: This role includes some physically demanding heavy work such as lifting equipment, moving furniture, etc.
Position Requirements
- Support for the identity and mission of Conrad Grebel University College
Education
- Training or experience in maintenance or custodial work preferred
- Training or experience in other types of service work
Skills/Experience
- Ability to do physically demanding work
- Ability to work independently in an unsupervised environment
- Ability to relate well to staff, students and conference participants
Technical
- Ability to work safely with machinery and equipment
Working Relationships
The incumbent will be directly responsible to the Building Operator, and will work closely with the regular maintenance/custodial staff and the Bookings and IT Services Coordinator.
Contract Duration
This contract begins in April and runs through to September 2025, specific start and end dates will depend on the availability of the successful candidate, at minimum the candidate must be available to start as of April 28 and work until September 1, 2025. Additional hours into the fall may be available on a casual basis.
Time Off
The contract runs for 18 weeks although up to two weeks of unpaid time off during slower periods in the summer schedule may be negotiated.
