Carol Penner

Dr. Carol Penner has been seconded to the role of Chaplain at Conrad Grebel University College for the next three years, beginning May 2, 2025. Penner has taught at Grebel since 2016 as Assistant Professor of Theological Studies and as Director of the Theological Studies (MTS) program since 2022. She will continue in those academic roles on a reduced workload while serving as Chaplain.

“I am excited to work with Carol as Grebel's next Chaplain,” said Jessica Reesor Rempel, Director of Student Services. “Carol brings expertise in both worship planning and teaching, which will allow her to be an engaged mentor to students on the Chapel Committee and beyond. Her many years of pastoral care experience will be a valuable resource to the students who will seek out her support as Chaplain.”

"I am eager to take on this role and become more engaged with undergrad students," Penner shared. “Working with young adults is going to be a wonderful challenge – the Grebel community is a dynamic place to minister because there is such theological diversity in the student body."

With a specialty in practical theology and as the applied studies supervisor for MTS, Penner is an ordained Mennonite minister with extensive pastoral experience. Her research interests include feminist theology, Mennonite peace theology, and abuse issues. She shares her worship resources in a popular blog at www.leadinginworship.com and has authored numerous books and articles.

“Grebel, along with the University of Waterloo itself, continues to work through difficult financial conditions,” explained President Marcus Shantz. "Part of our strategy for managing through these times is to think creatively about roles and positions. We are fortunate that Carol has a unique skillset that combines compassionate listening and proven pastoral leadership along with her academic expertise.”

Chip Bender

Since November 2023, Chip Bender has served as Grebel’s temporary Visiting Chaplain, working three days a week. “Chip quickly integrated into the life of the College and became a valuable pastoral resource for students, staff, and faculty,” noted Shantz. “We are deeply grateful for his dedicated service and contributions to our community during a transitional period for Student Services and the Chapel program.” Bender's contract concludes on April 30, 2025.
